Creating a termbase that will be used throughout your company is more complicated than simply collecting and entering specialist terminology. A properly implemented termbase will reflect how you anticipate using the data: Who at your company will develop or approve terminology, and who will use it? In what form will the data be used? Do you plan automated connections to third-party software? Questions like these are difficult to answer during the initial implementation because they depend on a series of terminological and technical factors as well as your company’s own past experiences. This is where our experts enter the picture. They offer the right mixture of consultation and implementation based on your particular requirements. Here is what we offer:
- TermDay – Our terminology workshop: Our internal workshop will give you the knowledge you need to properly compile and manage terminology at your company.
- Terminology creation – Outsourcing your terminology work: We are prepared to perform initial compilation of monolingual or multilingual terminology and help you launch a highly effective terminology workflow.
Our standard workshop for internal terminology management
Have you recognized that consistent terminology and uniform descriptions of your products contribute to long-term customer loyalty and improve the image of your company or brand? Does your company depend on its ability to launch products quickly and communicate effectively with consistent patterns of information? Or have you grown tired of struggling with confusing internal communication? If you answered “Yes!” to any of these questions, then we can help! This workshop is the motivation you need to get your terminology process and related workflows, concepts, and technologies off to the right start. Our experts have the perfect combination of real-life terminology expertise and technical skills. They will provide consultation and implementation services based on your requirements.
What to expect
TermDay is a two-day event at your company’s location. It is customized to your situation and is designed to bring your data and internal material to life. We work with you and your data to introduce the major concepts behind terminology management, provide tips for establishing unambiguous terms and definitions, and guide you towards establishing a terminology system that works for your company. The event is concluded with an initial workflow for efficiently capturing, approving, and managing your corporate language.
To make sure you start off on the right foot, we offer a trial installation of MultiTerm (and optionally of quickTerm) during TermDay.
Startup packages for your terminology project
When you outsource the initial creation of terminology, your terminology project will get underway faster, more economically, and “correctly”. The faster you can instill your process with life, the sooner it will become established at your organization. Once your termbase structure has been set up and we have defined key text corpora, we employ our specialized resources to establish a solid foundation for your terminology project. We offer two variations for this:
- Terminology extraction We use SDL MultiTerm Extract, a program that automatically extracts potential terminology from continuous text. This tool produces a long list of term candidates. The next step is to clean up the list and remove any clearly inaccurate suggestions. We then provide you with a clean list of term candidates, which you can quickly edit in a program like Microsoft Excel and use as a starting point for further terminology work.
- Academic partnership Thanks to our cooperative relationship with the University of Vienna, we can bring in students who can help with the process by covering the project in their master thesis. These projects allow for a more systematic compilation of terms used in a technical field or intense analysis of a specific product or area of your company. This type of collaboration benefits everyone involved: The students have a practical topic on which to base their research and you get an “employee” who is supported both by our company and a representative of the University of Vienna. This will give you an academically and technologically sound starting point.
Terminology is only useful if you can make sure it is actually being used. For this purpose, checkTerm checks terminology in your texts – via the clipboard, in your intranet, through plug-ins e.g. in MS Word, or directly in SDL Trados Studio. Its morphological engine correctly identifies declination, composites etc. and accurately pinpoints rejected or missing terms as well as variants.
You want to roll out terminology to everyone in your company? As quickly and easily as possible? With workflow and life cycle management, version control, and many other useful functions? With Web 2.0 capabilities, making terminology even more fun and interesting? With concept maps, visualizing correlations between entries in the termbase graphically? We produly present quickTerm!
SDL MultiTerm’s highly customizable database structure can be adapted precisely to your requirements. In fact, SDL MultiTerm is the only commercially available tool that can handle the demands of professional terminology management. MultiTerm’s tight integration into the SDL translation environment automatically provides the translator with the necessary terminology.
When it comes to creating and scaling first-rate content, seven of the ten most well-known brands around the world rely on Acrolinx. Use Acrolinx to plan, create, and analyze your content. Tailored to your target groups, it will be quick to find, easy to read, and engaging. Acrolinx is the only software platform that can “read” content and helps authors to improve it and find the right “tone of voice”.
One of the key success factors of all successful terminology projects is the constant self-marketing by the terminology team in their company. They need to keep bringing attention to the termbase, especially if the terminology process is to be collaborative. Motivate the user “crowd” to stay engaged with extra offers and additional benefits such as term quizzes or terms of the week.
If you want your users to actually engage with your terminology, it must be presented in a pragmatic, fast and easy to understand way. It is also essential to create clever search features, with an intuitive display of results. And the right features for everyone, depending on the way they work and their preferences. You can even add enriched content with terms of the week or term quizzes
